After a year’s absence, the popular S’mores Frappuccino returns to Starbucks on April 30. It will remain in the menu throughout the summer.
Ever since the drink debuted in 2015 as Starbucks’ way to commemorate the summer season, it has been a customer, and my, favorite. It’s one of the signs that summer has arrived and customers like me look forward to this cool beverage each year.
Last year, the blended coffee drink didn’t return leading customers to take to social media to voice their disappointment and disapproval. Starbucks heard, listened, and acted. The S’mores Frappuccino is back.
For those of you who haven’t had one, it’s layered with marshmallow infused whipped cream and chocolate sauce on the bottom, then a creamy blend of graham, coffee, milk, and ice, and finished off with more marshmallow whipped cream and graham cracker crumbles. The drink is inspired by the childhood summer experience of eating s’mores. It brings to mind those summer nights, roasting marshmallows around a campfire, and then squishing that marshmallow in-between two graham crackers that have been readied with chocolate bar squares. This cold beverage manages to evoke the flavors of a warm and gooey s’more. It’s essentially your favorite campfire desert in a cup.
According to Starbucks, it’s one of the company’s most popular drinks second only to the Pumpkin Spice Latte that comes out each fall. Maybe it’s the connection to childhood or the fact that s’mores normally require an open fire and so they are kind of a rare treat. All I know is that there’s something about it that makes people want one and then want some more (s’more). Plus it’s one of the only ways of getting all of the flavors of s’mores crammed together and ready to take on the go.
This frappuccino is only back this year because of popular demand and, just like in s’mores seasons past, is only around for the summer. For those who’ve never tasted it before, and for those of us who have been waiting and hoping for two years, now’s our chance. It’s a good time to cash in on those stars we’ve been hoarding. Or finally download the Starbucks app so we can take advantage of the next frappuccino happy hour when we can get one of these delicious drinks for free.
I’m counting the days when I can get the taste of s’mores with a boost of caffeine in every sip. This couldn’t have come at a better time. Finals, I’m ready for you.
