Unpredictable Three Years of My Life: Year Two

Moving on to my sophomore year, which for some reason UNC decided not to follow a pattern and call it second year, more words come to mind when I think about this year, such as:

UNC football team is so bad, More UNC construction, Davie Poplar bomb, Silent Sam protests, UNC basketball loses to Wofford at home, AC not working, Snow lots of snow, More restaurants close, Title IX violation, Academic scandal cleared, $5 billion campaign, Burglar in residence hall, People yelling at me at Ben and Jerry’s, 10 basketball games with two fever points and one of the games is the Duke game, UNC baseball chokes.

Sophomore year was full of Silent Sam protests. This wasn’t exactly strange, as there were many protests my first year. The reading of the Julian Carr speech was a lot to take in. I felt through this Silent Sam controversy, UNC became very divisive. It was eye opening to hear people you know and are in class with make very harsh remarks about it from one side or the other.

Also this year, someone tried to blow up the Davie Poplar Tree. A professor trying to put it out was hit with the resulting explosion. Thankfully that professor was okay and still teachers here. The Davie Poplar tree is also filled with concrete so it was fine. It was just scary because I working on some homework in my dorm and I receive an Alert Carolina that says explosion in Davie Poplar, and no other information than that. This was about an hour after it happened so I had no idea what had happened.

There was a huge snow storm after the first week of classes second semester. I had never seen so much snow. I tried to sled down Skipper Bowles but the snow was still soft so… insert pic here.

Also this snow storm put us out of class for like a week and a half so I had to redo my wall calendar.

Our football team so was so bad, but we beat Pitt which was good I guess. But like two wins bad.

UNC basketball lost to Wofford at home, which I am still in disbelief about. Then we lost to NC State, and NC State fans wouldn’t let us forget it until we played them again and won.  I went to 8 basketball games while only winning the lottery once, including the Duke game. I was also there for the Miami game when Miami hit the buzzer beater (can we stop losing in such heartbreaking ways?).

There was just a random influx of pizza places on and along Franklin Street.

I also got yelled at by some animal rights activists as I was waiting at Ben and Jerry’s on free ice cream day.

I had a single room after my roommate left mid-semester and transferred to ECU.

UNC was cleared of its academic scandal so that was good. But then we were found guilty of Title IX infractions and that’s horrible.

We had a student stealing stuff from our dorm. He was eventually taken away in handcuffs, after two months and multiple stolen items … like an XBOX, a tablet, a speaker. My stuff was never stolen but I guess all I had was a 24-inch TV and a tapestry, which I guess isn’t that advantageous.

Also more construction on the roadways and walkways, and construction in Davis Library which was a such an inconvenience.

Through all of this I am happy to go to UNC and I am happy to share these experiences. I feel like my college experience has and will continue to be unique and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
