Unpredictable Three Years of My Life: Year One

Looking back at three years I’ve been at UNC, it’s been an experience to say the least. Starting with my first year, or what many would call my freshman year, experiences that come to mind when I think about that year are:

Snow, No Water, Hurricane, NCAA Basketball Championship, Every restaurant I go to closes, UNC football kind of good, two Pit preachers at once, UNC construction, Davis construction, Basketball lottery failure, Intramurals, Pigs on campus, I saw President Obama.

There aren’t enough words, or time, to describe all of them, but here are a few of the more interesting (or memorable) ones.

My first year I got bumped from AAAD 101 to 214, and I had no idea why and I still don’t.

I sprained my knee and Campus health gave me a leg stabilizer. WhenI went back and they said I was fine.

I lost a Lenoir to-go box in the dumpster and fished it out with a random pole on the ground.

I got to the see the President of the United States: Obama. And almost passed out from dehydration in the process. I have like 5 videos on my phone from it that I’ve never watched.

We had a hurricane and my roommate and I had to find our friend. My umbrella broke due to the windso we bought a new one at the student store and it was like $30. The Pit was flooded and my clothes were wet for three days.

UNC football had a winning season and beat FSU. Everyone in my hallway high fived and was hyped. Then we fell apart and lost to Duke and NC State.

Basketball season was cool except I didn’t get go to a single game because I figured out the lottery system late. When I finally got a ticket, I came down with the Norovirus and couldn’t go.

We had snow and the roads were icy after Christmas break but they didn’t cancel classes so on the first day of classes people were slipping a lot and I don’t think anyone got hurt but it was kind of ridiculous.

Then the town of Chapel Hill, which included the university, hadno water. When I heard that I was like is this a joke? What do you mean there is no water? Then I bought 2 cases of smart water at CVS but luckily a friend from NC State was going home that weekend. I got a ride home with him and so I didn’t have to stay around on a campus without water. There was no water all weekend because fluoride had leakedinto the UNC water supply. Durham tried to supply water to Chapel Hill but that pipe burst.

There was also one day when there were pigs on campus. I was walking to class and I literally saw a pig. It was for an activist group that’s against meat but the sound scared me. I was on my way to a 9:30 class and I was so confused.

There also was the never ending construction that blocked the walkway back to my dorm so I had to go a longer way around.

On the last day of my first year, I had just finished my last exam and I didn’t think I did well ( I did do well, I think I was just overanalyzing it then ). I was sitting outside of Davis Library thinking and then all of a sudden some dude was rollerblading around me. It was just him and me on campus.

As I’ve said before, I love UNC, but it’s almost like you can’t prepare for any day here. When people say to separate distractions from your schoolwork, what do they say when things going at your school are the distraction?
