It’s March, you know what that means.

Okay so it’s March and you know what that means. It’s time for the best sporting event of the year: March Madness! This is especially true if you’re a UNC fan and your team is almost always in contention to win it all. I don’t know why it’s called March Madness, though, when most of it is in April.

I think March Madness is the greatest sporting event in all of sports because of a few simple reasons.

  1. 64 teams. The best 64 teams in college basketball up against each other. So, so many games and one goal–to win the NCAA Championship in men’s basketball.
  2. Upsets. It’s kinda funny that I say this one because UNC is one of the schools that players love to upset, and many people like to see us get upset. Small schools like UMBC can beat powerhouses like UVA. Nine out of ten times, UVA would have won that game, but some nights certain teams can’t make a basket and other teams can’t miss. Teams have on nights and off nights. You don’t get to see that in college football because it’s the top four teams. In March Madness, it is the winner of every conference (and then some), so teams that play in all the smaller conferences have an opportunity. On the March Madness tournament court, all the history or records don’t mean anything; it’s just 5 on 5.
  3. The whole country is watching. There is a boss button invented for people to watch while at work and not get caught. There are winner’s brackets that most people fill out, and compete with family, friends, and co-workers for bragging rights of their basketball knowledge with their accurate selections. Every game matters, and the players and fans are fully invested.
  4. Watching your team go on a deep run is so much fun. I remember as a first year at UNC, we won the NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship. Everyone in my friend group sat around one TV and watched all of UNC’s games during March Madness. That went on for weeks. It puts so much pride in your school. All your team has to do is survive and advance. Watching your team win a national championship is exhilarating, and the road there is incredible.

Everyone better have UNC winning in their bracket.
